Grouper- Dragging A Dead Deer Up A Hill.

Grouper is the artist name of Elizabeth (Liz) Harris from Portland, Oregon. Her music is a mixture of softly-strummed acoustic guitar and her delicate, dreamy vocals, both of which are heavily drenched in reverb. Her spooky, ethereal and surreal sounds are based on her acoustic, often avant garde guitar plucking and her quiet, hazy vocals. The minor key melodies are pretty despite a suspenseful nightmare quality. It is truly a beautiful release best for rainy days and cold baths.

My Life As of Late.....

Lately I have been listening to nothing but sleazy releases from 60's Japan. They are the hottest thing ever. These lovely ladies are all former porn stars. This is a small bit of my collection. These will have your pants off in no time. Enjoy.

Tani Naomi-Modae No Heya:

Tani recorded this album to commemorate her withdrawal from the porn business. Seen in retropsect, the disc stands out as one of the top 5 erotic albums to come out of Japan. Still her musical endeavor is an odd one amongst the other Iroke chanteuses. Right from the opening on, Tani's direction becomes clear with her narrating in a teasingly melancholic way over a kayokyoku backing track. The effect is stunning, an utterly fornlorn sense of the Showa erotic. She brilliantly succeeds in conveying the atmosphere of true Japanese eroticism, a fleeting and fragile emotion that evaporated in the cynical miasma of the eighties.

Petite M'amie-Girlfriend Babydoll:

this portrays the sleazy sexy underbelly of late sixties and early seventies Japan perfectly. Originally recorded and released on May 5th, 1971, Petite M'amie was the nick name for Mari Keiko. Although she does not get naked on the cover like all the other starlets, the music she hushes out into being is utterly depraved, spiked up with an unheard quality of forlorn sleaziness, an erotic hushing and uttering that would make even Ike Reiko blush.

Masami Kawahara & The Exotic Sounds-Ecstacy:

Sonic-wise, the disc unleashes a whirlpool of Latin styled mondo -sexploitation sounds that get spiced up with feminine breathing and respiration sounds, moaning and hissing, igniting a maelstrom of assorted eroticism and sexual depravity. In all, it resembles a caged vixen engaged in sexual intercourse, hatching out cries, moans, sighs, words and other sounds such as the crackling of a whip and such, bringing out fully every possible sound made by a sexpot in heat.

Ike Reiko- Kokotsu No Seka.

Ike Reiko: Kokotsu No Sekai-
This is my favorite release out of the 60's japanese sleaze records. When Ike Reiko was first discovered by Japan's Toei Studios, she was still in her late teens. Along with Miki Sugimoto she was Toei's top sex star throughout the 1970s, and the focus of the "sukeban" or female girl boss phenomenon of '70s Japanese cinema. Despite real-life trouble with the law, being arrested once for drugs and once for illegal gambling, she worked throughout the decade appearing in at least two of Kinji Fukasaku's "Battles Without Honor & Humanity". Her only musical release is titled Kokotsu No Sekai. Her erotic presence flutters across a multitude of erogenous non-verbal modes - moaning and uttered shrieks of ecstatic pleasure, sibilating suffocated whispers of excitement, and grunting and growling like a bitch in heat. When Ike does sing, it is in a subdued, husky voice about sex, submissive love and seduction.

Die Doraus und Die Marinas.

Die Doraus und Die Marinas are a german group. Their music is an infectious mix of 80's new wave and synth pop. Andreas Dorau was only like 16 when this album was made, and the group of schoolgirls billed as Die Marinas were even younger. It is simply marvelous.

Fruitification is the First solo release by Michael Prime who was then graduating in Ecology and Conservation in London. Co-founder of live electronic group Morphogenesis in 1985 (with Clive Graham, Roger Sutherland, Ron Briefel, Fred Sansom and Andy Courdry), Prime is famous for his development of bio-feedback in experimental music, amplifying plants or fungi, using bat-detectors as sound source, etc. His own music and that of Morphogenesis can be considered the british branch of David Tudor, David Behrman and Gordon Mumma’s live-electronics of the 1970-80s. The first track on this LP is based on voice recordings, the 2nd uses a bat-detector’s output and the last is build from field recordings. It is definately a good release.

Lucky Dragons-Dream Island Laughing Language.

Lucky Dragons, an experimental music/art group based in Los Angeles, is the moniker given to “any recorded or performed or installed or packaged or shared pieces made by Luke Fischbeck, Sarah Rara, and any sometimes collaborator.” Blending an organic approach to electronic music with a background in the arts, they make very textural electronic experimental music, (this release particularly) mostly centered around looping. the name "lucky dragons" is borrowed from a japanese fishing boat caught in the fallout of hydrogen bomb test at bikini atoll in the 1950's. the crew stricken ill, and the boat itself contaminated, the "lucky dragon" became a crystalizing symbol for the previously diffuse worldwide anti-nuclear sentiment. In this release the sounds vary from thumb piano to gongs to drums and bells, and manages to stay interesting. They have been said to be creating a completely new strand of West Coast American psychedelia.

Vibes-You God It.

Vibes is the Not Not Fun supergroup involving Amanda of Pocahaunted, members of Robedoor, Magic Lantern, and Fantastic Ego. It's a 60's esque garage-psyche freakout intermixed with Amanda's wonderful disembodied screeching. The first track sound similar to Japanese garage psyche, with interlaying wah disco guitar parts that occasionally pop up. The second track is a slow building psyche jam with classy wah. It's worth it.

Sachiko-Kunado.

Not to be confused with Sachiko M, the Japanese former member of Ground Zero, and member of the Onkyo scene. Sachiko is a Japanese experimental musician who had formerly worked mainly with violin improvisation. The release Kunado is a dense exploration into ambient drone territory. It features disembodied vocals swimming amongst mile deep drones and passionate noise currents at times swirling through slight industrial processes. Sachiko was a member of both Kousokuya and Overhang Party. In these former projects she had fully developed an approach to monolithic minimalism to fairly staggering effect.

J. Spaceman and Matthew Shipp- Spaceshipp.

I have come to appreciate anything that Jason Pierce, aka J. Spaceman has touched. Formerly of Spacemen 3, and now of his solo project, Spiritualized, he does not fail to please. He also worked on the soundtrack for the Harmony Korine film Mister Lonely. Recently he did a collab with Matthew Shipp, an avant garde pianist. The collab perfectly titled Spaceshipp was realeased in late 2oo8 on the Treader label. It is a dense swirling mass of beautifully painted spaced out drone. Here it is:

Svarte Greiner-Knive.

Svarte
Greiner's debut release titled Knive. Svarte is better known to most as Erik Skodvin, one half of the brooding electronic project named Deaf Center. His music has been classified as "doom acoustic". The opening track on Knive wields sounds varying from swelling strings to crow caws to technical guitar plucks and taps in a beautiful electroacoustic manner. The rest of the album is an epic combination of the same elements and more to create a beautiful and tragic release. The sounds he generates are dark and intricate. His work has been compared to Machinefabriek among other well known experimental acts.
